ATLANTA (Oct. 19, 2007) Despite a strong second half, the Georgia State men's soccer team dropped a close 1-0 decision to the visiting Drexel Dragons in its first CAA match at home.
The Panthers allowed a late goal in the first period and struggled to match the score against pressure. With less than 20 minutes left in the period, Anthony Bafile shot the ball into the right side of the net after beating one defender and sending goalkeeper Filipe Carvalho diving in the opposite direction. The Dragons dominated the tempo in the first half, outshooting Georgia State 10-6.
Junior midfielders Linus Warendh and Joe Devito led the Panthers offense combining for three shots and one on goal.
Georgia State opened the second period more aggressive on the goal, but could not connect on scoring opportunities against a stiffened Dragons defense. Drexel held the Panthers to just two shots in the second period and two shots on goal overall. State had few opportunities late in the second period, but Drexel held on to win the 1-0 lead.
Carvalho finished with nine saves while Drexel's Cory Robertson recorded two on the day.
With the loss, the Panthers fall to 4-7-1 and 1-4 in the CAA and Drexel improves its record to 8-2-2 and remain undefeated in the conference.
The Panthers hit the pitch again on Sunday, taking on the Delaware Blue Hens at Panthersville at 1 p.m.
