ATLANTA – Georgia State's Derek Oakey finished tied for sixth at the 39 th annual Dogwood Invitational on Friday, June 30 at the Druid Hills Golf Club. Oakey, a native of LaGrange, Ga., fired a final-round score of 73 to finish with a nine-under-par 279 total.
Oakey, who was a member of State's CAA Championship team and three NCAA qualifying teams, carded rounds of 68, 69, and 69 over the first three rounds. He was tied for third heading into the final day, just two strokes shy of the lead. Oakey finished seven strokes behind winner Hudson Swafford and tied with six other golfers at sixth. Swafford fired a six-under-par 66 in the final round to take over first-place held by Webb Simpson on the final day. Swafford ended with a 16-under-par 272, three strokes ahead of Simpson.
The Dogwood Invitational is one of the premier summer events in the southeast and is played at Druid Hills Golf Club in northeast Atlanta.
