PRESTWICK, SCOTLAND – Georgia State men's golfer Mark Haastrup played a key role in helping the European team take a 10-2 lead on day one of the Palmer Cup presented by Monster at the Prestwick Golf Club on Thursday, June 29. The European team won six of eight singles matches in the afternoon after sweeping the four-ball session in the morning against the United States team. FRIDAY UPDATE: The European team swept all four Friday morning matches to up the lead to 14-2 with just the eight singles matches left to play, ensuring the Europeans the championship of the Palmer Cup.
Haastrup, a Second Team All-American, teamed with The Netherlands Joost Liuten in topping the U.S. tandem of Luke List (Vanderbilt) and Clay Ogden (BYU), 4 and 3. The Hoejby, Denmark , native, birdied hole No. 6 and parred the seventh, 10 th and 11 th to extend their lead to 4-up.
In the afternoon single matches, Haastrup competed against Ryan Baca (Baylor). Baca was a senior First Team All-American who is currently on the PGA Tour and qualified for the U.S. Open where he played two rounds at six-under-par 136, but missed the final cut in his first PGA Tour event. Baca defeated Haastrup, 3 and 2, in giving the U.S. team its first point of the day. Haastrup trailed Baca by four holes, but cut the lead in half by clinching the next two holes. Baca extended his lead to three with a par on hole No. 15 and won the match when both he and Haastrup parred No. 16.
The final two rounds of the Palmer Cup will begin on Friday, June 30 at 7:30 a.m. with foursomes matches. The Palmer Cup is in its 10 th year of pitting collegiate golfers from the U.S. and Europe in Ryder Cup-style of play.
