Panthers battle at British Amateur Championship

State 10th after Day 1

ORLANDO, FLA (Oct. 22, 2006) -- The Georgia State men's golf team fired a 297 to end Day 1 of the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in a tie for 10th place.

No team finished Day 1 under par but Georgia leads after a 3-over round of 291.

Senior Derek Oakey and junior Joel Sjoholm helped lead the Panthers firing 1-over rounds of 73 to finish in a tie for 19th place.

Senior Ben Taylor finished right behind with a 2-over round of 74 to finish tied for 29th. Freshman Tom Sherreard is tied for 55th place with a 5-over round of 77. Senior Morgan Nix finished the day with a 14-over 86.

"This is an extremely tough tournament, but we played solid the first day," said head coach Matt Clark. "We had some bogeys on the last couple of holes. I am proud of the way Joel and Derek played staying around par all day. This is an exciting event. We even had Arnold Palmer follow Morgan Nix's group. All the way arouind this is a first class event. I am looking forward to two more big time rounds and hopefully coming home with a victory."
