Duarte Named Sun Belt Men's Tennis Player of the Week

ATLANTA— Georgia State fifth-year senior Andrei Duarte has been named Sun Belt men's tennis Player of the Week as announced by the conference on Wednesday. Duarte finished unbeaten in singles and doubles play over the weekend at 3-0 as No. 63 GSU secured the Sun Belt Conference regular season title and clinched the top seed for the SBC Championship Tournament.

Competing at the top singles court position for the Panthers, Duarte registered a three-set win, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, over conference rival Georgia Southern on the road last week helping lead GSU to a 5-1 final record for regular season conference play.

The fifth-year followed up the performance with a pair of wins in singles and doubles facing Tennessee Tech at home for Senior Day. Duarte charted a win in doubles, 6-1, alongside partner Roberts Grinvalds, followed by a victory at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-2.

ITA ranked doubles pair Duarte and Grinvalds have helped lead the Panthers to wins in 17 of 22 doubles outings this spring.

The all-time leader in wins for Georgia State men's tennis, Duarte receives SBC Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career. Duarte finished the spring 2022 regular season with 14 victories in singles outings as well as 15 victories in doubles.

Duarte and the No. 1 seeded Panthers open play at the SBC Championship at Peachtree City Tennis Center on Friday, April 15. The Panthers will receive a bye to the semifinal round and will play the winner of Coastal Carolina versus Troy.

Matches will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be provided by the conference.
