Duarte Named to Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Top 20

ATLANTA- Georgia State men's tennis fifth-year senior Andrei Duarte is among 20 student-athletes across the nation to be honored as 2022 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars as announced by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education. The publication named 10 female and 10 male honorees out of nearly 1,000 collegiate student-athletes nominated for the award.

The annual Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars special report edition will name one male and one female athlete as Sports Scholar of the Year on Thursday, April 28. The yearly edition is part of a decades-long tradition of recognizing outstanding minority young men and women who have distinguished themselves in academic and athletic pursuits.

Students named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars are students of color who have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5, are at least sophomores academically and have been active on their campuses or in their communities.

Born in Bucaramanga, Columbia, Duarte began his bachelor's degree at Georgia State in fall 2017. The fifth-year has maintained Dean's List honors in every semester since enrolling at GSU and has been named a Division I Men Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete four times.

As a member of the Panthers, Duarte earned All-Sun Belt Doubles First Team honors for spring 2021 as well as All-Sun Belt Doubles Second Team honors for spring 2018. Duarte has competed at the top court in both singles and doubles this season and has accumulated a 12-4 record in singles play as well as a 13-3 record in doubles.

Having previously earned the honor in spring 2021, this is the second nomination as an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar for Duarte.
