CLARKSTON, Ga. - The Georgia State men's tennis team kicked off it's 2021-22 campaign this weekend as it welcomed Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State and Troy to the GSU Clarkston tennis courts for the Panther Invitational. 

Andrei Duarte and Roberts Grinvalds opened the fall season in spectacular fashion as they both went 4-0 in singles play, while winning their individual singles tournaments. Duarte won the Panther Invitational singles blue tournament, while Grinvalds won the singles white tournament. 

As a pair, the ITA preseason top-60 duo accumulated a 2-0 record en route to winning the doubles blue tournament. Harvey Conway and Raul Garcia of Kennesaw State won the doubles white tournament. 

As a team, Georgia State accumulated a 15-5 singles mark against the opposing schools, while notching a 5-3 doubles record. 

The Panthers dominated the singles tournaments as both finals consisted of all Georgia State players. On the blue side, Duarte defeated Mihai Marinescu 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 and, on the white side, Grinvalds defeated Harvey Maughan 7-5, 6-2. The finals losses were Marinescu and Maughan's only singles losses for the entire weekend.

This weekend marked Edward Tymes and Harrison Kim's first collegiate action.  

Tymes' performance was highlighted by a 3-1 singles record for the weekend. Kim got his first collegiate doubles win as him and Marinescu defeated Nicolas Rodriguez and Manuel Bernard of Troy 6-2 on Friday. 

Diego Padilha was forced to retire during his first singles match of the tournament after suffering a knee injury. 

Georgia State will look to continue it's stellar play when it hits the road to compete in the Mercer Gridiron Classic next weekend, Oct. 1-3.
