New Soccer Complex Opens for Games This Week

ATLANTA – The Georgia State women's soccer team got a taste of its new home facility last week and the men's soccer team gets that same honor today.

After more than a year of construction and conversion, the former Georgia State Football Practice Facility has been converted into a beautiful new practice and playing facility for both soccer teams. A formal ribbon cutting ceremony was held last week, but the fun gets underway later this week as both teams host their first exhibition matches of the year.

The complex sits at 188 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SE and along with a playing surface includes state-of-the-art locker rooms, an athletic training area, and team meeting rooms for both squads.

"This facility is a massive step forward for our program," women's soccer head coach Ed Joyce said. "It allows us to really embrace what we are: an urban campus in the middle of one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Our girls are so excited to get the season going in their new home!"

"This is such an incredible facility for our soccer programs, and we are beyond excited to get started here this fall at our new home," men's soccer head coach Brett Surrency said. "Big thanks to our administration and operations staff for the vision and execution of putting together such an elite complex, right in the middle of downtown Atlanta."

The new facility continues a trend for Georgia State of converting older facilities into new state-of-the-art ones in the downtown, landlocked area. Four years ago, Georgia State took over Turner Field, converting it into Center Parc Stadium which houses both the football program, administrative offices, and much more. The University was also a part of the Bobby Jones Golf Course transition which now houses both golf teams just minutes from campus.

The women's soccer team will get the honor of playing the first exhibition game at the new facility this Thursday at 7 p.m. hosting Stetson. The men's soccer team will follow two days later hosting Clayton State on Saturday also at 7 p.m.
