Troy, Ala.– Georgia State men's tennis defeated Sun Belt foe South Alabama on Friday afternoon during a neutral site contest in Troy, Ala. 

The win propels the Panthers to an 11-5 overall record, including seven consecutive matches. This marks the most wins in a row since the 2017 season. Additionally, Georgia State remains undefeated in SBC action. 

GSU jumped to the early lead with strong doubles play. No. 47 Harvey Maughan and Kevin Huynh fell to the No. 39 pairing in the country. The remaining courts rose to the occasion as Mihai Marinescu and Vazha Shubladze and No. 76 Roberts Grinvalds and Andrei Duarte found wins on their respective courts to clinch the one-point advantage. 

The Jaguars would not go down easily, quickly responding with a victory on court four to tie the match. South Alabama took their first lead of the day with a straight set win on court three. The reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week, Vazha Shubladze, found a crucial victory over No. 79 Evrard on the top court to knot the match once again. 

With three courts left in play the Sun Belt rivals continued to battle for the team victory. Senior Kevin Huynh put the blue and white within striking distance of the win with a decision on court five. Once again the Jaguars would respond to tie the match for a third time with a win on court two over Harvey Maughan. With all eyes on the sixth position, Lazo remained level headed, coming from behind to force a third frame. Ultimately, the junior outlasted his opposition In the deciding set to clinch the GSU victory.

Next up, the Panthers will continue Sun Belt play with a contest against Troy on Saturday. Action will begin at 3:00 p.m. ET.
