Patel Named Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week

Led Panthers to Win at No. 10 Georgia Tech

Georgia State freshman right-hander Mason Patel is the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week after an outstanding midweek start at No. 10 Georgia Tech in which he led the Panthers to a 10-1 victory and their fourth win of the season over a nationally-ranked opponent.

Making just his second start, Patel pitched six scoreless innings and struck out eight, the most strikeouts for a GSU freshman since 2013, when current Los Angeles Angels minor leaguer Nathan Bates fanned 11 at New Orleans.

Patel allowed four hits, all singles, and walked only one. The Knoxville, Tenn., native retired the first 10 batters of the game before allowing his first hit.

After Georgia Tech loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth inning, Patel kept them off the scoreboard with two strikeouts and a flyout to end the threat.

Patel and the Panthers play at No. 2 Florida tonight at 6 p.m. on SECN+.
