ATLANTA – Georgia State Athletics announces a major milestone in its long-anticipated baseball stadium project, as the City of Atlanta officially approved the Land Disturbance Permit on November 18, 2025. With this approval, Georgia State has received all necessary clearances to begin construction on its new baseball facility, a transformational addition to both the university's athletics portfolio and the surrounding Summerhill community. The contractor has already begun moving equipment to the site in recent days.
Construction is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2026. When finished, the stadium will provide several key benefits including bringing the baseball program closer to the heart of campus, furthering GSU's investment in the continued development of the Summerhill neighborhood and creating more opportunities for engagement with students, faculty, staff and alumni at a location just steps from Center Parc Credit Union Stadium, GSU Convocation Center, and Georgia State's downtown campus.
The $15.4 million project will be built on the historic site of the former Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium, the longtime home of the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta Chiefs, the Peach Bowl and many other landmark events, including Olympic baseball in 1996.
The location also marks one of the most significant moments in sports history; Hank Aaron's record-breaking 715th home run on April 8, 1974. Georgia State is deeply committed to honoring Aaron's legacy, beginning with the relocation of the Hank Aaron statue from Center Parc Credit Union Stadium to the new baseball stadium's main entrance. Among other tributes to be announced honoring the former stadium's unique heritage, the facility will include a commemorative marker in left field denoting the location of Aaron's home run, replacing the existing chain link fence and block wall erected after the stadium's demolition.
Beyond honoring history, the new stadium will feature modern amenities designed to enhance both player development and fan experience. Plans include a turf playing surface, expanded dugouts, upgraded batting and bullpen facilities, new technology infrastructure and improved seating and hospitality spaces.
"This stadium represents more than just a place to play baseball," Georgia State President Dr. M. Brian Blake said. "It connects Georgia State to Atlanta's sports legacy and creates a vibrant future for our program and community."
Georgia State recognizes the significance of this project for its community and supporters. Updates will be shared as progress continues.
"We understand the importance of this project to many," Georgia State Athletics Director
Charlie Cobb said. "It is exciting for us as well. Additionally, there are still ways to help us expand our scope by financially contributing to the project. Every contribution helps us make this project even more special for our student-athletes, fans, and alumni."
Georgia State extends sincere gratitude to the loyal donors whose generosity has made the project possible to-date. Naming partners for the stadium and playing field will be announced once approved by the University System of Georgia Board of Governors. Numerous additional naming opportunities remain available for those interested in
contributing to this historic project.
