Box Score BOONE, N.C. – Georgia State women's tennis fell 4-3 to Appalachian State Saturday afternoon at the Deer Valley Racquet Club.
The loss drops the Panthers to 2-7 on the season and improves the Mountaineers to 2-5. The match marked the first Sun Belt tilt for both programs.
The Panthers jumped to the lead after winning the doubles point. Freshman Nansi Toskova and sophomore Denisa Gheorghe teamed up for the first time this season. In their opening outing the pair found a quick win in the No. 3 position. Ellie Aldrich and Andreea Stanescu clinched the one-point advantage with a 6-3 result on court two.
The Mountaineers responded with a quick straight set victory on court three to tie the match at one. Stanescu continued her momentum from doubles into singles play. The junior, who began the season at line four, has continued to move up in the GSU lineup during the 2021 campaign. Today, the Romania native registered her fifth consecutive victory, this time playing on court No. 2 for the first time. App State would respond with a 7-6, 6-4 result over GSU's No.1, Eva Chivu.
With the match knotted, Maddy Frediani, a freshman from the United Kingdom, picked up a crucial decision on court six to give the Panthers the late edge. The Mountaineers would outlast Alexia Alvarez to tie the match once again. Ultimately, the Mountaineers would snag the last point of the match with a victory over Toskova, who was playing in her first collegiate singles match, on court five.
Georgia State returns to the court 11:00 a.m. Sunday for a matchup against Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers opened Sun Belt play with a 4-0 victory over Georgia Southern. The South Carolina based squad enters tomorrow's contest with a 5-2 overall record. Fans can follow the action via live stats.
