ATLANTA - Following six combined singles and doubles wins last week, men's tennis star
Andrei Duarte has been named the Georgia State Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday.
Duarte found doubles and singles victories in each of Georgia State's three wins last week. The Georgia native did not drop a set over nine of play in those six matches.
In Tuesday's Sun Belt Conference opener against Coastal Carolina, the senior found Georgia State's only doubles win with a victory with partner
Patrick Lazo on court three. Duarte would find a win in the third position in singles action, as the Panthers swept singles play to take the match 6-1.
GSU paused Sun Belt Conference action in a meeting with Presbyterian College on Friday. Duarte and
Roberts Grinvalds, the No. 68 doubles pairing in the country, found a victory on the second court to help the Panthers take the doubles point. Duarte earned a quick 6-2, 6-3 decision to take the first point of singles play. The Panthers would go on to win 6-1.
Georgia State finished the week with a contest against in-state foe Georgia Southern. Duarte and Grinvalds earned another victory in doubles play to help the Panthers take the early advantage. Duarte earned another straight-set decision in singles action to find the fourth point of the match and to clinch the team victory. The Panthers went on to sweep the Eagles, 7-0.
Overall, Duarte has accumulated 11 doubles victories this season, the most on the team. Additionally, he has earned seven wins in singles play.
Duarte and the Panthers will return to action on Friday facing Sun Belt Conference foe South Alabama. The match will be played in Troy, Ala.
