Proctor Named Finalist for Senior CLASS Award

ATLANTA – Coming off a remarkable season, Georgia State men's soccer senior George Proctor was named one of 30 finalists for the Senior CLASS Award on Wednesday.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character, and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Proctor was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, along with the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year last November. He led a backline that allowed just six goals in 11 matches, including six clean sheets, while scoring a pair of goals and adding two assists. He finished fourth on the team with six points.

The senior earned Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week honors three times, including the final two weeks of the season, keying the Panthers to a pair of crucial victories in the final two matches. He finished the fall tied for 13th in the country in total assists (top 5 in the Sun Belt) and tied for 18th in the nation in goals (top 10 in the league). He was also in the top 25 nationally in points and in the top 10 in the Sun Belt Conference in that category. He was named honorable mention to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team on the Week on Oct. 7, and Nov. 9, and also named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week on Nov. 2, and Nov. 11.

In the classroom, Proctor is working toward a degree in health and physical education with a goal of becoming a coach after his playing days are over. Proctor has earned a pair of Dean's List honors, as well as Athletic Director's Honor Roll recognition in his time at Georgia State.

In terms of community service, Proctor has led efforts with the birthday party project here in Atlanta, where we have visited elementary schools such as Fred Toomer Elementary in the Kirkwood area. He has also coached clinics at 'Soccer in the Streets', and during the teams' pre-season trip to Jekyll Island, assisted with free clinics for youth soccer players in those communities.

"Very proud of George this year and all that he's accomplished on and off the field," head coach Brett Surrency said. "It's been fun watching him grow through the years and to see him now as a candidate for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award is incredible. Simply put, he is a great representation of the Georgia State Men's Soccer Program."

Last season Proctor was the captain of the team, a student-athlete that puts the team, and his teammates before himself without a second thought. He leads by example every single day in the classroom, on the field, and within the community.

Each of the 60 candidates (30 male and 30 femaile) has displayed a strong work ethic in the classroom and on the pitch. Outside of academics and athletics, all candidates have also been consistently involved in community service on their campus or in their communities.

Each of the two candidate classes will be narrowed to 10 finalists in April, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character, and competition.

The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2021 NCAA Men's and Women's College Cup® championships in May.
