PEACHTREE CITY, Ga.– Georgia State men's tennis (6-5) outlasted ETSU (4-6) 4-3 in a nail-biting match Friday afternoon at the Peachtree City Tennis Center.
The Panthers earned their fourth straight doubles point in the effort. Andrei Duarte and Patrick Lazo teamed up for the first time this season on court three, besting their opposition 6-1. Mihai Marinescu and Vazha Shubladze clinched the one-point edge with a 6-3 decision in the second spot.
The Bucs, who entered the match on a four game winning streak, quickly rebounded. Andrei Duarte was bested by Frazier Rengifo on court two 6-4, 6-3 as the Bucs knotted the match. GSU and ETSU continued to go back-and-forth with the remainder of the courts going to three sets. Senior Kevin Huynh regained the Panthers lead, besting his opposition on court five. The Panthers could not get comfortable as Patrick Lazo fell on court six and the Bucs tied the match once again.
Harvey Maughan, the Sun Belt Player of the Week, was able to remain poised as he methodically defeated his opponent on line three. Before Maughan left the court, the Bucs were able to add to their point total, defeating Shubladze on court one. With the contest tied 3-3 all eyes went to court four, where rookie Mihai Marinescu represented the blue and white.
Marinescu engaged in long rallies and fought for each point. Eventually, the Romania native was able to outlast his competition to clinch the Georgia State victory.
