ATLANTA – After falling to Charlotte in last weekend's season opener, Georgia State men's tennis heads to Lynchburg, Va., to battle Liberty (2-3) Friday before returning to Georgia for a Sunday contest with Mercer (1-2) in Macon.
Friday's match at Liberty is set for a 2 p.m. first serve, followed by a 1 p.m. start against Mercer on Sunday. Friday's match will be closed to the public, but fans can follow along with the action via live stats.
GSU opened last weekend's contest by clinching the doubles point. No. 30 Roberts Grinvalds/Andrei Duarte took down No. 39 Henry Lieberman/Ben Wayand in position one. Freshman Mihai Marinescu partnered with senior Kevin Huynh. The pair emerged victorious in their first outing, defeating Leo Menezes/Collin Thomson on court three.
Vazha Shubladze, who reached as high as No. 104 in last season's Oracle/ITA singles rankings, cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory, playing in position one. Shublaze earned GSU's lone point in singles action during the day. The junior was named GSU Student-Athlete of the Week after his strong outing.
On Friday, the Panthers will face a Liberty team that is coming off a 4-3 victory over Old Dominion, the first win over ODU in program history. Mercer enters the weekend after picking up their first win of the 2021 season with a 6-1 result over Alabama State last weekend .
