PEACHTREE CITY, Ga- The Georgia State men's tennis team defeated Furman 6-1 Saturday afternoon in the team's last match of February. Freshman Mihai Marinescu clinched the match with a straight set victory on court four.
With the win, the Panthers improved to 3-3 while Furman fell to 3-4.
Georgia State opened the match strong, taking the doubles point. Harvey Maughan and Kevin Huynh defeated their opposition 6-4 on court two. Mihai Marinescu and Vazha Shubladze bested their opponents by the same score to secure the doubles victory. With the one-point edge clinched, No. 30 Andrei Duarte and Roberts Grinvalds were bested in a tiebreaker on the top court.
GSU went up 2-0 early, as Duarte rebounded from his doubles loss to defeat Henrik Atlevi 6-1, 6-2. Shortly after Grinvalds found a 6-2, 6-4 result to add to the Panthers point total. Marinescu clinched the match at the No. 4 position over Emil Westling.
With the match clinched, play continued between the Panthers and Paladins. Maughan picked up the fourth straight set singles victory for GSU on the day, playing on court five. Patrick Lazo bested Benjamin Cahill in three sets to find his first victory of the 2021 campaign. Shubladze fell at the No. 1 position, as Furman avoided the sweep.
The team will return to the court Friday, March 5 to face Old Dominion. First serve is slated for 11:00 a.m. at the Peachtree City Tennis Center.
