Bats Come Alive in Doubleheader Sweep

GSU scored a combined 23 runs in 11 innings Saturday at North Carolina A&T.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Georgia State's offense overwhelmed North Carolina A&T on Saturday as the Panthers swept the doubleheader in Greensboro, winning Game 1 11-2 in five innings and Game 2 12-4 in six.

The Panthers exploded for six runs in the first inning of Game 1, highlighted by freshman Carolyn Deady drilling a grand slam for her first collegiate home run. Sophie Mooney got the start in the circle and took a no-hitter to the fifth inning. Mooney ended up getting a one-hit comeplete game and didn't allow an earned run.

Deady and Daisy Hess each finished with four RBI in the first game. Emily Brown went 1-for-1 with two walks, three runs scored and three RBI in the leadoff position. Brown showed off her speed with a 3-run inside-the-park homer in the top of the 5th to set up the run-rule victory.

Game 2 also started with Georgia State on top. The Panthers built a 3-0 lead in the top of the first but the Aggies responded with four unanswered to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Panther lineup came alive with three runs in the top of the fifth followed by a six spot in the top of the sixth. Bailee Richardson hit her second home run of the season in Game 2 and was one of three players to record three RBI. Sophie Mooney, who provided a spark in the circle in Game 1, went 2-for-3 with three RBI in Game 2.

Julia Allen got the start in the circle for Game 2 and struck out six in 2.1 innings of work.

For the day, Hess drove in seven runs with a pair of doubles and a triple. Brown went 3-for-5 with a homer, four RBI and four runs scored, Richardson also went 3-for-5. She homered and knocked in three runs while scoring four times. Deady totaled five RBI, going 3-for-6.

As a team, Georgia State drew 16 walks in the two games, led by Gabby Benson who walked three times.

The Panthers improve to 5-2 on the year and travel to Wilmington to play a doubleheader Sunday at UNCW beginning at noon.
