Buck Impressive as Panthers Split Doubleheader at UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Emily Buck threw a complete game to lead Georgia State to an 8-2 win in Game 1 at UNCW Sunday, but the Seahawks took Game 2 5-4 to split the series.

Buck allowed one earned on five hits for her second win of the season in as many starts. After two starts this season, Buck has a 1.91 ERA with two complete games and a shutout.

Daisy Hess continued her impress start to the year, recording hits in both games to push her hit streak to nine games. Hess drove in a pair of runs in Game 1 with an RBI double in the first and an RBI groundout in the sixth. Hess leads the team in doubles (5), extra-base-hits (6) and RBI (11).

Georgia State struck early with a three-run first inning. The Panthers are outscoring opponents 12-3 in first innings this season. UNCW got a run back in the bottom of the first and the two teams traded scoreless frames until GSU posted a five-run sixth inning. Freshman Carolyn Deady knocked a two-run double in that sixth inning and now has nine RBI through her first nine games.

UNCW took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in Game 2. Georgia State used back-to-back RBI singles by Gabby Benson and Emily Brown to take the lead in the top of the second. Benson advanced to third and took home on a heads-up play to make it 3-1 before Hess doubled home Brown to cap off the four-run frame.

UNCW held GSU scoreless over the final five innings and scored once in the fourth, and three times in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Julia Allen entered the circle in relief and threw a scoreless 1.1 innings with a strikeout.

Through nine games, Brown leads the team in hitting at .433. Bailee Richardson is hitting .417 with 10 RBI, second most on the team. Sexton is hitting .400 with five stolen bases and Hess is slugging .600 with a .367 average. The Panthers have drawn 38 walks led by Benson with six. Benson's .563 OBP is best on the team.

Georgia State sits a 6-3 on the season and returns home to host No. 16 Georgia at noon on Saturday and Miami (Ohio) at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Bob Heck Softball Complex.
