Stanescu Cruises to First Win of Season; Panthers Fall to GGC

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA- After earning their first win of the season yesterday, Georgia State women's tennis (1-4) fell to Georgia Gwinnett (4-0) in a quick turnaround contest. The match marks the fourth of nine consecutive road meetings GSU has scheduled to start the season.

Veteran Andreea Stanescu and freshman Ellie Aldrich earned their first victory as a duo on court two to begin doubles play. Georgia Gwinnett responded and surpassed GSU on the remaining courts to take the one-point edge going into singles action.

Stanescu struck first in singles play, earning her first win of the season in straight sets on court four. Quickly after knotting the match at one a piece, the Grizzlies regained and extended their lead with victories on courts three and five. After dropping the first frame on two of the three remaining courts, the last three contests each went to a third and deciding set. Chivu played an extremely competitive and tough match on line one. Despite her strong composure, Georgia Gwinnett clinched the match with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 decision.

The Panthers continued to fight on courts two and six for individual results. The Grizzlies would maintain their momentum, outlasting GSU on the final two courts to add to their point total.

Next, the Panthers will meet Kennesaw State on the road Tuesday, Feb. 23. First serve is slated for 4:00 p.m. Fans can follow along via live stats.
