ATLANTA – Georgia State men's tennis (1-3) suffered a 7-0 setback to crosstown rival Georgia Tech (4-2) Friday night at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
The Panthers had a strong start to Friday night's competition. No. 30 doubles pair, Andrei Duarte and Roberts Grinvalds, secured a 6-4 win at the No. 1 position over No. 31 McDaniel/Schelcher to move to 3-1 as a pair during the young season. Ultimately, Georgia Tech outlasted GSU on courts 2 and 3 to take the one-point advantage heading into singles play.
In singles competition Tech jumped out to a quick start winning the first set on each court, despite the Panthers taking both courts 3 and 4 to a tiebreaker. The Jackets clinched the team victory with decisions on courts two, three, and six. GSU could not find a response to slow Georgia Tech on the remaining courts.
Mihai Marinescu knotted his match at a set a piece, but ultimately was outlasted in a third set tiebreaker, as the Jackets completed the sweep.
Georgia State will return to action Friday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. against Kennesaw State. Fans can follow along via live stats.
