Duarte and Grinvalds Reach Doubles Semifinals at ITA Southeast Regionals

GAINESVILLE, Fla - Several members of the Georgia State men's tennis team had stellar performances at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regionals this weekend in Gainesville, Fla.

The Panthers were led by the ITA preseason top-60 duo of Andrei Duarte and Roberts Grinvalds as the pair reached the doubles semifinals of the tournament.

Along the way, Duarte and Grinvalds picked up doubles victories over pairs from Georgia Tech, FAU and Florida, before falling to a pair from Miami (Fla.) in the semifinals.

Duarte and Grinvalds also put together stellar runs in the singles backdraw.

After dropping early contests in the main draw, both players went on a run as Grinvalds defeated Juan Martin Jalif of Miami (6-4, 6-4) and Lucas Wayenburg of Mercer (6-1, 6-4), while Duarte defeated Munuel Goncalves of USF (6-3, 6-2) and Gerard Escandell of FAU (6-3, 6-3).

After winning consecutive matches in the back draw, the two players eventually faced off in the quarterfinals and Grinvalds came out victorious by a score of 4-6, 6-4 [10-4].

"I'm especially proud of Andrei and Roberts for their run in making the semifinals of doubles and for having a nice run in the back draw before they had to face one another," said head coach Jonathan Wolff

As a team, Georgia State had a tough first day of action as Harvey Maughan, Diego Padilha, Duarte and Grinvalds all narrowly dropped their first round singles matches. Each contest was tightly contested, but the Panthers were unable to come out victorious.

Edward Tymes and Patrick Lazo also put together solid performances in the singles qualifying rounds to start the tournament. Lazo picked up a win over Matthew Carrol of UNF (6-4, 2-6 [10-4]), before eventually falling in the next round.

"Overall, I'm proud of our team for bouncing back after a tough first day of the main draw, having lost four close singles matches," said Wolff. "We'll continue to work hard for our next upcoming fall tournament at Georgia Tech."
