Georgia State to Face Charlotte in Season Opener

ATLANTA – The Georgia State men's tennis team (0-0) will begin the 2021 season with a home bout against Charlotte (1-1) at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

Andrei Duarte and Roberts Grinvalds enter the upcoming season ranked as the No. 30  doubles pairing in the country. Georgia State returns five additional veterans from last season, including seniors Kevin Huynh and Steven Huynh. Vazha Shubladze enters his junior campaign for the blue and white after being ranked as high as No. 104 in the singles rankings last year. The 2019 Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year is poised to make a climb in the rankings again this season.

Two newcomers round out GSU's roster. Harvey Maughan joins the Panthers as a junior transfer from Kennesaw State. Mihai Marinescu, a native of Romania, is the only freshman on this year's squad.

The Panthers registered a 5-8 record, including a 4-3 victory over Charlotte, during the shortened 2020 campaign.  In doubles action, Duarte/Grinvalds were ranked as high as  No. 28, best for second highest in school history. While in singles, three Panthers accumulated five or more wins in dual season matches.
