Carney Finds Win as GSU Falls to Liberty

ATLANTA, Ga. – Georgia State women's tennis (0-1) suffered a 6-1 setback to Liberty (1-0) in Saturday afternoon's season opener at Life Time Athletic and Tennis.

Liberty opened the match with a 6-4 doubles victory on court 3. Despite taking courts one and two to tiebreakers, the Panthers were unable to comeback and take the doubles point, falling in both.

Liberty would maintain their momentum going into singles action. The Lady Flames extended their lead to 4-0, clinching the match, with singles victories on courts one, two, five and six. Carney went on to notch a strong 6-2, 6-3 win on court 3 for the blue and white. Despite, staying competitive, team captain, Andreea Stanescu fell on court four to give Liberty the final point of the match.

Today's victory marked Carney's third victory in dual match action in her collegiate career. The Georgia native has split time between the No. 3 and No. 4 spot in GSU's lineup.

GSU returns to action at 3 p.m. Monday for a match at Florida. The match marks the first of three consecutive road meetings with Power Five opponents.
