Benson Participating in Summer Softball League

Gabby Benson is playing for the RiverMocs of the Florida Gulf Coast League.

BRADENTON, Fla. - Junior Gabby Benson is playing softball this summer in the Florida Gulf Coast League, a five-week collegiate summer league in Bradenton, Fla.

"I was contacted by an old friend in the softball world about this league that was happening," Benson said. "The executive director of the league, Ryan Moore, asked if I wanted to play for his RiverMocs team. After our GSU season was cancelled, I had to put softball on hold for longer than I ever have in my life. When I got that text that I could pick up a softball earlier than expected, I was all for it."

The players reported Sunday, June 14 and participated in a three day mini-camp. Due to COVID-19 health and safety precautions, all players and training staff will have daily temperature checks and a full-time athletic training staff is on hand.

The league consists of seven teams – FastpitchU, Impact Softball, Lynx, Pioneers, Rivermocs, Bradenton Slice, and Manatee Squeeze – competing over five weeks. Players represent more than 56 schools and all divisions of collegiate softball.

Benson's roommates in Bradenton are both players that she know or played with in the past and she has several other softball friends from Georgia competing in the league.

"The thing I'm most looking forward to is getting to know these girls from colleges all over and making more connections in the softball world. I hope to create some good friendships and learn from different athletes from across the country."
