Men's tennis senior Bailey Showers reflects on his time at GSU

Bailey Showers played four seasons for the Georgia State men's tennis program, excelling both on the court and in the classroom. He was part of the 2017 team that won the Sun Belt Conference Championship and made the NCAA Tournament and the 2019 team that helped GSU capture its first ever Sun Belt Regular Season Title. In addition to a career record of 42-18 in doubles play as well as 30 career singles wins, Showers was named a 2018-19 CoSIDA Academic All-American and is a two-time ITA Scholar-Athlete.

Dear Georgia State,

What a ride it has been. As I look back on my four years at this university, I could not have asked for a better experience, both on and off the tennis court. The journey has had its ups and downs, no doubt, but I wouldn't have had it any other way. From capturing a conference title in my freshman year to coming painfully close the past two seasons, it's definitely hard knowing I've gone to war with my teammates for the last time.

Despite this, I look back at my experience at GSU with nothing but the utmost affection, due in large part to the relationships I have forged during my time here. My teammates, and the team in general, were a very tight-knit bunch who had a great chemistry, which is something I always loved. Always pushing each other to do better and to work harder, whether it be on the practice court, a dual match, or off the court. The feeling of adrenaline and intensity I got when I competed with these guys is unlike what I'd ever felt before just playing tennis for myself. Tennis probably isn't the first sport to come to mind when people think of team sports, but that's what makes the college tennis experience so special.

I also would never have been in this position if I hadn't been given the opportunity by our first head coach, Brett Ross, and later someone who I consider to be one of the best coaches I've ever had in Jon Wolff. Having good coaches is key to any student-athlete experience, and I could not have been luckier to have Jon and Brett. I also still keep in touch, to this day, with one of our assistant coaches from a couple years ago. Those kinds of unique bonds are what made my Georgia State experience so special, and why I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

I will definitely miss this part of my life and all the great times that came with it. Once a Panther, always a Panther. Bleed Blue.

Thank you, Georgia State.
