Dave Kaplan, First Director of Football Ops, Passes Away

Dave Kaplan, a staple in the Atlanta community and the first Georgia State Football Director of Operations under Bill Curry has passed away.

Kaplan came to Georgia State shortly after the launch of the football program and served in his role in 2009. Although it was a year before the Panthers would kick off in the Georgia Dome, Kaplan helped oversee a year of practice with a full team as it prepared for its first game in 2010.

"Dave was a wonderful human being and a great friend," Curry said. "He brought a wealth of knowledge and experience that was so helpful in those early days when we were getting the program off the ground."

Before arriving at Georgia State, Kaplan served as the executive director and tournament director for the Atlanta Classic Foundation, Inc. He directed and managed Atlanta's former PGA Tour event, most recently known as the AT&T Classic, from 1983 through 2008.

Prior to his long stint with the Atlanta Classic Foundation, Kaplan served as the manager of public relations for Six Flags Over Georgia and as coordinator of special promotions for Lake Lanier Islands (1977).

Kaplan was the assistant sports information director at Georgia Tech from 1972-73, and sports information director from 1974-76, including one year while Curry was an assistant football coach.

He is survived by his wife Marcia and son Chandler.
