THE GAME: Georgia State 38, Tennessee 30, Aug. 31, 2019 at Neyland Stadium, Knoxville, Tenn.
THE PLAY: Holding a five-point lead at Tennessee with five minutes to play, QB
Dan Ellington sealed the deal with a spectacular 22-yard touchdown run. He faked a handoff to
Tra Barnett but kept the ball and ran left, juking two defenders on his way to the end zone. That put the Panthers up 35-23 with 4:45 left and sent Georgia State to its first-ever win over a Power 5 opponent and one of the most significant wins in program history.
THE DRIVE: After Tennessee took a 23-21 lead with 12 minutes to play, Ellington drove the Panthers 75 yards for the go-ahead score, a 19-yard touchdown run by Barnett that gave Georgia State a 28-23 lead with 8:56 left.
Tennessee took the ensuing kickoff and moved to out midfield when GSU cornerback
Evan Jones sacked Jarrett Guarantano and forced a fumble, which was
recovered by the Panthers'
Jhi'Shawn Taylor at the UT 39. Ellington scored five plays later.
AFTER THE GAME:
Dan Ellington:
"We just came out and played every play like it was our last. We just wanted to come in here and prove everybody wrong and we did that.
"I just kept giving it, giving it, giving it. One of the rules I have is that If I can beat the defensive end, then pull it. On that play, I pulled it, and I saw a linebacker chasing me. Â I knew if I made him miss, I knew I was going to get a lot of yards. I stuck it and made him miss. I saw nothing but the checkers in the end zone and I told myself, You gotta get in there.. Sam [Pinckney] made a good block and I got in there."
Head Coach
Shawn Elliott:
"I don't know if anyone else in the country believed that a program just a mere 10 years old could come in here to Neyland Stadium at the University of Tennessee and beat them. We believed. We notched a signature win for our university and our football program."
