Â
MACON, Ga.- Georgia State women's tennis (5-8) defeated Mercer (3-8) 4-3 on the road Saturday afternoon. After losing the doubles point, the Panthers outlasted their opponents in four tight matches to find the win.
Â
During the doubles point, the Panthers split courts one and two with the Bears. Mercer took the one point advantage behind a 6-3 victory over freshmen duo Alexia Alvarez and Angel Carney.
Â
The Bears would extend their lead with a win over Denisa Gheorghe on line six. Immediately following, Andreea Stanescu would put the Panthers on the board with a win. Stanescu has proven to be a reliable force in the fifth position, winning eight of her matches this season. The remaining veterans, Eva Chivu and Damira Muminovic, would close long three-set matches to put the Panthers in the lead, but Carney would fall on court four to tie the match. Â
Â
With the game on the line, Stromova stayed composed on court three as she battled for each point in long and controlled rallies. Her ability to keep her opposition pushed to the baseline limited Mercer's shot selection, ultimately earning herself the 6-4, 7-5 victory to clinch the match.Â
Up next for the Panthers is a two match home stay, as Georgia State opens Sun Belt play. The Panthers will first face ULM Saturday before battling Louisiana Sunday.Â
