ATLANTA – In a match that saw five of its six singles contests go into a deciding third set, Georgia State men's tennis (1-4) suffered a 4-1 setback to cross-town rival Georgia Tech (4-2) Friday night at the Ted Byers Tennis Complex.
The Panthers had a strong start to Friday night's competition, securing the doubles point after wins on court one and three. In their first week as a nationally ranked doubles tandem, GSU duo
Andrei Duarte/
Roberts Grinvalds secured a 6-2 win at the No. 1 position to move to a perfect 3-0 on the dual season and 8-2 overall in 2019-20.
Bailey Showers/
Patrick Lazo followed with a 6-4 victory on court three in their dual season debut as double partners to hand Georgia State a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
In singles competition, Georgia Tech evened up the score with a win in straight sets on court four, then grinded out a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory on court six to take the lead.
GSU looked to battle back with wins on the remaining courts – all of which went to a final set – but were unable to come away with any points. Georgia Tech's Andres Martin, ranked No. 75 in the latest Orcale/ITA Singles Rankings, knocked off
Quentin Coulaud 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 on court one, then Pablo Schelcher finished things off with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Duarte at the No. 3 spot.
Grinvalds and Showers were on the verge of earning points for the blue and white, with Grinvalds tied 4-4 in the third set and Showers leading 5-2, but both went unfinished.
