Another Sun Belt Player of the Week as Strachan Honored

After one of the most productive defensive performances in program history, Georgia State outside linebacker Jordan Strachan is the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Strachan collected three tackles for loss, including 2.5 sacks and recovered two fumbles, one of which he also caused, to help the Panthers to a hard-fought, 36-34 victory at Troy.

The junior from Kingsland, Ga., and Camden County High School helped Georgia State hold Troy to just 40 yards rushing, the second-lowest figure in school history.

In the pivotal third quarter, in which Georgia State outscored Troy 20-0, Strachan had two sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He sacked Trojan quarterback Jacob Free and stripped the ball deep in Troy territory, recovering at the Troy 8-yard line. Four plays later, the Panthers scored to take a 33-21 lead.

His first fumble recovery came in the second quarter as he scooped up a loose ball and returned it 63 yards to the Troy 20 for the fourth-longest fumble return in GSU history.

For the season, Strachan leads the Sun Belt with 6.5 tackles for loss and five sacks, which has already tied the GSU season sack record. In the last two games alone, he has four sacks, 4.5 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and two caused fumbles. Against Arkansas State, he caused the fumble that Blake Carroll recovered and returned for a 73-yard touchdown, and then against Troy, Carroll caused the fumble that Strachan returned 63 yards.

His performance this season is even more noteworthy because Strachan missed most of the 2019 season after suffering a serious knee injury in the season-opening win over Tennessee, just 17 plays into the game.

He is the second GSU defender in three games to earn the Sun Belt weekly honor, following safety Antavious Lane for the East Carolina win.

Strachan and the Panthers (2-2, 1-1 Sun Belt) face a big test this week as undefeated and No. 20-ranked Coastal Carolina (5-0, 3-0) visits Center Parc Stadium for a 12 noon game that will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
