Men's Tennis Picks up Wins Over North Florida, Kennesaw State

* Georgia State went 2-0 in Friday's doubleheader, defeating North Florida 4-3 and Kennesaw State 4-0
* Doubles duo Giles Hussey & Jack MacFarlane won their fourth straight match and are 6-1 in their last seven matches

PEACHTREE CORNERS, Ga. – Georgia State men's tennis earned back-to-back wins in Friday's doubleheader at the Life Time Athletic Courts, collecting a 4-3 victory over North Florida before sweeping Kennesaw State 4-0 in the nightcap.

The Panthers improved to 6-5 overall, winning back-to-back matches for the first time this season. Since GSU moved into the No. 49 spot in the latest ITA National Top 50 rankings, the blue and white are 2-0. Georgia State also revamped its record at home to 3-1 after dropping its first match on its home courts against No. 48 FAU on Tuesday.

GSU continued to stay hot in doubles play as the Panthers took the doubles point in both matches and have secured the doubles point in three straight contests, including four of their last five. Duo partners Giles Hussey and Jack MacFarlane and Andrei Duarte and Roberts Grinvalds each notched a victory in both matches to extend their winning streaks.  

Hussey and MacFarlane won their fourth straight match as a pair and are 6-1 in their last seven matches, including a perfect 2-0 at the No. 1 position. Grinvalds and Duarte have won three in a row and remain unbeaten at the No. 3 position with a 3-0 record.

In singles play, freshman Vazha Shubladze finished the day 2-0 to snap a two-match losing streak. Bailey Showers also snapped a losing streak on Friday, as he knocked off Jorge Nunez of UNF 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 to secure his first clinch of the season. He became the fourth different Panther to clinch a match for GSU this year.  

Clinching the match for Georgia State in its bout against Kennesaw State was Hussey, who claimed his second clinch of the season, tying Andrei Duarte as the team leader. Duarte tallied his third singles win at the No. 5 position against UNF. Also ending Friday with a win was Grinvalds, who collected his fifth overall victory of the season, tying Hussey and Shubladze for the team high.

Georgia State returns to the court 6 p.m. Sunday for its final home match of a four-match home stand against Charlotte at the Life Time Athletic Courts in Peachtree Corners, Ga.
