SORRENTO, Fla. – Led by a 2-under par 70 from Petra Duran, Georgia State opened the MSU Spring Citrus Challenge with a 9-over par 297 to stand in second place at RedTail Golf Club following Sunday's first round.
Duran is tied for the lead, as only three golfers broke par on day one of the three-day event.
Georgia State stands 10 strokes off the lead in the nine-team field.
“Really proud of the way we played today,” head coach Cathy Mant said. “Our team has been working hard and that hard work paid off today. Petra has been putting in a lot of extra work and to see it pay off with a great round like she had today will give her a lot of confidence moving forward.”
Sophomore Chloe Howard added a 1-over 73 and is tied for fifth with 36 holes to play. Junior Harmanprit Kaur and freshman Maria Blasco each shot rounds of 77 and are tied for 19th, while freshman Alejandra Ayala rounded out the line-up with a 6-over 78 to sit in a tie for 26th.
Murray State opened play with a 1-under 287 to hold the 10-stroke lead over the Panthers. Keiser University is in third place at 14-over, with Austin Peay standing in fourth place at 15-over. Dartmouth rounds out the top five at 18-over par.
Duran is tied with Murray State's Anna Moore at 2-under par after 18 holes. Murray State's Linette Holmslykke stands in third place at 1-under par, with Keiser's Serra Evrengil in fourth place at even par. A group of four golfers that includes Howard are tied for fifth at 1-over par.
Georgia State will be paired with Murray State and Keiser beginning at 10:18 a.m. off Hole No. 1 on Monday. Fans can follow the team on twitter @GSU_WGolf.
Following this week's tournament, Georgia State will host the John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate March 31-April 2 at Eagle's Landing Country Club in Stockbridge.
