FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – Led by junior Harmanprit Kaur who leads the 86-player field, Georgia State shot rounds of 297 and 301 on Monday to sit in a tie for third place at the Amelia Island Collegiate at Amelia National Golf Club.
Kaur, the lone upperclassman in the field for Georgia State this week, opened the tournament with a 71 on Monday morning before shooting 72 in the afternoon to stand 1-under par as the only golfer under par after 36 holes.
Georgia State, which is playing in its opening event of the spring season, is tied with Sam Houston State, just 10 strokes back of tournament leader North Florida.
“I'm so proud of the way everyone played today,” head coach Cathy Mant said. “Everyone in our line-up contributed and that is what it takes to be successful at this level. Harmanprit worked really hard in the offseason and is playing some incredible golf right now. I was equally impressed by Maria who worked hard on her putting all offseason and showed the work pay off today.”
Kaur made five birdies during the 36-hole day and will be looking for her first collegiate win during Tuesday's final round.
Sophomore Chloe Howard and freshman Maria Blasco are tied for 21st at 7-over par. Each opened play on Monday morning with rounds of 74 before shooting 77's in the afternoon.
Sophomore Petra Duran shot an opening round 78 before responding with a 76 in the afternoon to stand in a tie for 34th at 10-over par. Freshman Emma Berlin rounded out the line-up with rounds of 79 and 76 to sit in a tie for 42nd at 11-over par.
North Florida leads the 16-team field at 12-over par with Marshall in second place at 16-over par. The Panthers are tied Sam Houston State at 22-over par, followed by Florida Gulf Coast in fifth place at 24-over. Georgia State's opening round 297 was the third-lowest round of the tournament on day one.
Kaur leads the field at 1-under par, with five golfers tied for second place at even par. The group includes Sam Houston State's Hanna Alberto and Jenna Phillips, along with Florida Gulf Coast's Laura Edmonds, North Florida's Mindy Herrick and Daytona State's Jessica Bailey.
Georgia State will be paired with North Florida and Marshall for the final round going off Holes No. 1-3.
