Panthers Top Troy in Sun Belt Conference Semifinals 4-1

What You Need to Know:
* No. 4-seed Georgia State earned a 4-1 win over No. 1-seed Troy in the Match Play Semifinals of the Sun Belt Championship on Tuesday morning at The Raven Golf Club in Miramar Beach, Fla.
* Georgia State finished the stroke portion of the tournament in a tie for third-place with Arkansas State. The Red Wolves lost to Georgia Southern 3-2 in the morning match.
* Georgia State will face No. 2 seed Georgia Southern starting at approximately 2 p.m. ET this afternoon.


MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. – No. 4 seed Georgia State earned a 4-1 win over No. 1 seed Troy on Tuesday morning in the Match Play Semifinals of the Sun Belt Championship and will advance to the afternoon to face either No. 2 Georgia Southern for a championship.

Junior Max Herrmann clinched the match with par on the 18th hole to defeat Cam Norman 1up.

After sophomore Nathan Williams fell to Luke Moser 1 down in 19 holes, junior Alex Herrmann tied the match 1-1 with a 3&2 victory over Clay Vannoy.

Sophomore Nick Budd gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead with a 2up victory over Calum Masters.

Senior Nathan Mallonee earned a 1up win over Jared Bettcher when the match was called after 17 holes.

“What an incredible match,” head coach Joe Inman said. “Both teams played really well. Our guys made some clutch putts down the stretch and now we will go out and see if we can win a championship this afternoon.”

Georgia State had lost to Troy 3-2 in the championship match of the Sun Belt tournament last season.

Since 1998, Georgia State has finished in the top three in the conference tournament all but three times with seven titles and eight second-place finishes.

With a conference championship win, Georgia State will automatically earn a spot into NCAA Regional play which will be played May 15-17 at six national sites. Without a win, the Panthers will have to wait to see if they are selected as an at-large team. The NCAA championship is scheduled for May 26-31 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.
