JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.- The Georgia State men's tennis team opened the ETSU Shootout with a 4-1 victory over UAB Saturday afternoon. Sebastian Acuna clinched the match for GSU, his first game-clinching point of the season.
The Panthers improved to 7-5 with the win, while the Blazers fell to 4-2.
Georgia State opened the match strong, clinching the doubles point in straight sets. Zackery Kennedy and Quentin Coulaud defeated Eric Komati and Christian Coetzee 6-3, while Felipe Jaworski and Jack MacFarlane won 6-1 over Nikolai Manchev and Anru Fourie.
In singles play, Andrei Andrukhou widened the score to 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Gonzalez. The Panthers went up 3-0 with MacFarlane's 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Tom El Safadi, but the Blazers closed the gap to 3-1 when Coulaud fell 6-3, 6-3 Coetzee.
Acuna clinched the match 4-1 in the No. 5 match, defeating Fourie 6-4, 6-3. Kennedy and Jannis Koeke's matches went unfinished due to the clinch.
The Panthers will return to the court tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. in the final match of the ETSU Shootout when they face host ETSU.
