DURHAM, N.C.- The Georgia State men's soccer team earned an impressive road win on Tuesday night with a 2-1 victory over Duke. Sophomore Max Hemmings scored the game-tying goal while a defensive score in double overtime gave the Panthers the win.
Georgia State improved to 6-4 on the season following the victory, while the Blue Devils fell to 3-2-3.
Both teams played fairly even the entire match, with Duke narrowly outshooting Georgia State 18-15. The Blue Devils got on the board first, with Cameron Moseley scoring off a corner kick in the 38th minute of play to give Duke a 1-0 lead which it held into halftime.
Coming out of the half, the Panthers looked to rally and tie the match to earn their second road win of the season. GSU created several chances, but wasn't able to score until Max Hemmings slipped the ball past the goalie off an assist from Nick Hague with 15 minutes to play.
The game ended in double overtime after a defensive goal from the Blue Devils was scored with 105 minutes on the clock. The win gave Georgia State its first victory over Duke in the series history.
Junior Rashid Alarape led the offensive effort for the Panthers, taking five shots with two on target. Junior Yannic Horn led the defense with six total saves.
“I thought the guys did a great job out there and earned a tough win,” said head coach Brett Surrency. “We did some really good things tonight and are pleased with the result. The team earned everything they got and I couldn't be happier for them.”
The Panthers will return to the field Sunday afternoon to host Pacific to open October play. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. Admission to the GSU Soccer Complex is free and live stats will be available at GeorgiaStateSports.com.
