UPDATE:
Following an impressive performance while training with the Egyptian National Team, Suzanne Arafa has earned a spot on the team to play for the Africa Women Cup of Nations.
"It's an honor to play for the Egyptian National Team and I feel very lucky to make the squad for the Africa Cup of Nations," Arafa said. "This is one of the best international tournaments, so to say I'm excited is an understatement."
ATLANTA – After being named to the All -Sunbelt First Team in November and NCSAA All-South Region Third Team in December following her outstanding performance during the 2015 season, Suzanne Arafa has been invited to train with the Egyptian Women's National Team from July 10-23 in preparation for the Africa Women Cup of Nations later this year.
“This is a once-in-a lifetime opportunity. I have spent two thirds of my life on the soccer field, if not more, and love the beautiful game. I always wanted to improve my game and take it to the next level,” said the senior midfielder. “I hope to contribute to the continued success of the Egyptian National Team and bring my experience of training and playing with them to my game at Georgia State University.”
Arafa is a native of Acworth, Ga., but has roots in Egypt. Her father, Mohamed, an American of Egyptian descent was born in Cairo, which allows her to train with the squad. American Federation scouts Mohammed El-Zare and Omar Addallah referred Arafa to the Egyptian team.
Arafa led the Panthers in goals with nine in 2015, including the game-winner against Troy in double overtime in October. She also led the team in assists with five and ranked second for shots with 44.
Training with the Egyptian National Team is taking place in a suburb of Cairo. Following the camp, Arafa hopes to make the team and play for it in the Africa Cup of Nations.
“The highest level of soccer, of course, is that of the international play. So, it is just a great opportunity for me and I am hoping to make the best out of it,” Arafa said.
The Cup will take place from Nov. 19, to Dec. 3, in Cameroon.
