ATLANTA- In its first Sun Belt Conference match of the season, the No. 59 Georgia State men's tennis team defeated UL Lafayette 4-0.
The Panthers improved to 8-3 and 1-0 in the Sun Belt, while the Ragin' Cajuns fell to 9-8 and 0-2 in Sun Belt play.
GSU opened doubles play with solid matches, securing the doubles point in a tie-breaker in the No. 3 match. Zackery Kennedy and Jack MacFarlane were the first pair to finish, defeating Arthur Libaud and Will Huyton 6-3 in the No. 2 match. Edgar Lopez and Eric Perez of UL Lafayette took the No. 1 match with a 6-3 win over Sebastian Acuna and Andrei Andrukhou before Jannis Koeke and Felipe Jaworski clinched the point with a 7-5 (7-2) defeat of Vlad Kramarov and Coleman Wahlborg.
In singles play, Jaworski earned a quick point with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Perez in the No. 6 match. Andrukhou was the next Panther to finish, putting the team up 3-0 with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Huyton. MacFarlane then clinched the match with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Wahlborg.
The final three matches went unfinished, with Koeke and Acuna both up in the second set while Kennedy was heading into the tie-breaker.
The Panthers head to Florida for three road matches beginning with UCF on March 16 at 2 p.m., followed by North Florida on March 18 at 6 p.m. and Florida Atlantic on March 20 at 11 a.m.
