ATLANTA- In a Valentine's Day doubleheader, the Georgia State men's tennis team split a pair of matches, falling 6-1 to No. 44 Georgia Tech and defeating Emory 7-2.
The Panthers improved to 4-2 this season, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 6-3 and the Eagles fell to 1-2.
In doubles play against the Yellow Jackets, Jannis Koeke and Felipe Jaworski were the first pair to finish with a 6-2 loss to Nathan Rakitt and Andrew Li. Zackery Kennedy and Jack MacFarlane fell to Christopher Eubanks and Carlos Benito 6-3 in the No. 2 match. The No. 1 match went unfinished, with Sebastian Acuna and Andrei Andrukhou facing the No. 24 pair of Michael Kay and Casey Kay.
In singles play, Koeke fell to No. 9 Eubanks 6-4, 6-2 in the No.1 match. Kennedy was the next to finish with a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Benito, putting GSU down 2-0. Jaworski then fell 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to Rakitt in the No. 6 match.
In the game-clinching match, Acuna fell to Li 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 3 match. The only GSU point came from Andrukhou, who defeated Michael Kay 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (12-10). MacFarlane was the final Panther to finish his match, with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 loss to Cole Fiegel.
“I thought we battled against Georgia Tech and we did a really good job of keeping our focus and intensity all the way to the end,” head coach Brett Ross said. “Obviously we came up short, but I think we showed we can compete at a really high level.”
The Panthers fared better at Emory, losing only one doubles match and one singles match.
Kennedy and MacFarlane were paired together again at the No. 2 spot, defeating Rafe Mosetick and Johnathan Jemison 8-3. Acuna and Andrukhou put the Panthers up 2-0 with their 8-5 win over Scott Rubinstein and James Spaulding. Koeke and Jaworski fell in the No. 3 match to David Omsky and Andrew Harrington, cutting the team's lead to 2-1.
MacFarlane widened the lead to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Adrien Bouchet to open singles play. Koeke finished next, defeating Mosetick 7-6, 6-1 in the No. 1 match. The next Panther to finish was Kennedy in in a close 7-6, 7-6 loss to Jemison.
The game-clinching point came from Andrukhou, with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 win against Aman Manji. With GSU up 5-2, Jaworski defeated Josh Goodman 7-5, 6-0 in the No. 5 match. Joseph Bishop finished the match with a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 win over Harrington and putting the score at 7-2.
“The match against Emory was a solid team effort,” Ross said. “Winning definitely breeds confidence so it was good for a lot of our guys to finish the day off with some wins.”
Georgia State will be back on the road for a Feb. 19 match at Oklahoma State at 6 p.m. and a Feb. 20 match at Wichita State at 1 p.m.
