BOONE, N.C.- The Georgia State men's soccer team earned its third shutout of the season and second in a row, at Appalachian State Saturday night. Hannes Burmeister scored the game-winner, his second of the season.
The Panthers improved to 10-6 overall (2-1 Sun Belt) while the Mountaineers fell to 4-7-3 overall (1-2-1 Sun Belt). GSU moved to third place in the conference with six points, behind Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern with seven points each.
Both teams attempted to control the ball and keep the other out of the net, with Georgia State narrowly outshooting Appalachian State 7-6. The Panthers had a solid defensive performance, keeping the Mountaineers from taking any shots on goal.
Burmeister was able to score with less than a minute left in the first half, putting the team up 1-0 off a pass from Max Hemmings. The eventual game-winner was the sophomore's ninth goal of the season.
Burmeister led the team in shots with three, two of which were on target. Defender Nick Hague fired two shots for the team, with freshmen Kyle Clinton and Frank Rosenwald both taking a shot.
“I couldn't be happier and more proud of the guys for their performance tonight,” head coach Brett Surrency said. “This is a really tough place to play, so for them to come out with a win a win as well as a shutout is massive.”
The Panthers will be back on the field on Wednesday to host College of Charleston for their final non-conference match of the season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Panthersville. Live stats will be available at GeorgiaStateSports.com and parking to the GSU Soccer Complex is free.
