Men's Tennis Improves to 2-1 After Win Over Mercer

*The men's tennis team picked up a 5-2 over Mercer this Saturday at Piedmont Park

*The team improved to 2-1 rhis season following the win.

 ATLANTA- Georgia State earned its second straight win of the season following a 5-2 victory over Mercer on Saturday afternoon at Piedmont Park.

GSU improved to 2-1 this season while Mercer fell to 1-4.

In doubles play, Mercer came out strong and won two of the three matches to take the point. Jannis Koeke and Valentin Horvat fell 6-1 in match No. 1 against Arnav Mohanty and Arsav Mohanty. Andrei Andrukhou and Zackery Kennedy defeating Sam Philp and Ruben Vanoppen 6-3 to tie the decision before the Bears came away with the doubles point when Jack MacFarlane and Felipe Jaworski lost 6-4 to Fernando Guardia and Nicolas Guillon.

Mercer went ahead 2-0 in the match after Andrukhou fell 6-1, 6-0 to Guillon in match No. 3 of singles play. Kennedy scored the first point of the match for the Panthers when he defeated Arnav Mohanty 6-3, 6-1.

Koeke tied up the match at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Sam Philp in match No. 1 of singles play. Joseph Bishop was the next Panther to earn a team point, putting GSU ahead 3-2 after a 6-4, 6-4 win over Vanoppen.

The game clinching point came from Jaworski with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Arsav Mohanty. MacFarlane ended the match with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 over Anderson Scarpa in the tie-breaker set.

“I was really proud with the way the guys competed today, especially after battling a few injuries,” head coach Brett Ross said. “Mercer's strength is their doubles play, but we came back after dropping the doubles point and won the final five singles matches. It showed a lot of heart from our team, and it was a total team effort today.”

The Panthers will return to the court hosting Lipscomb on Feb. 6 in the third of seven home matches. The match is scheduled to be played at 5 p.m at LifeTime Fitness in Norcross, Ga.
