ATLANTA- On the opening weekend for the Georgia State men's tennis team, the Pantehrs went 1-1 with a 6-1 loss at No. 65 Alabama on Saturday before earning a 5-2 home win against Furman on Sunday.
In Tuscaloosa, Ala., Jannis Koeke earned Georgia State's only point by defeating No. 106 Korey Lovett 6-4, 6-3 in singles play. Koeke and Giles Hussey won 6-3 in No. 3 doubles over Greyson Goldin and Becker O'Shaughnessey.
The Panthers scored an impressive home opening win, dropping just two singles matches and one doubles match. Jack MacFarlane and Felipe Jaworski were the first to win their doubles match defeating Furman's Alex Steryous and Stefan Rhodes 6-0.
Koeke and Hussey dropped their match 6-2 to Ben Horst and Matt Browne, but Sebastian Acuna and Andrei Andrukhou's 6-4 win picked up the doubles point for GSU.
In the singles competition, four Panthers won their matches en route to the victory.
Jaworski defeated Josh Pistorius 6-4, 6-1, and Hussey defeated Galen Arney 6-3, 6-2, to put GSU ahead 3-0. MacFarlane gave Georgia State the clinching point and the Panthers first win of the season.
Furman picked up a pair of point as Acuna fell in his match 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 and Koeke dropped his 6-3, 7-5. Andrukhou earned the final point for the Panthers with a 6-4, 3-6, 13-11 win against Cameron Green to secure a 5-2 win for the team.
“Overall, this was a successful weekend for us. Alabama is a quality SEC team and we competed well against them. Today, we were able to take care of business and come away with a win. Now we're looking to the match against a great Mercer team in two weeks,” head coach Brett Ross said of the weekend.
Georgia State will return to the court on Jan. 30, against Mercer at Lifetime Fitness in Norcross, Ga. The time of the match will be released at a later date.
