JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – Freshman Yasemin Sari's round of 73 capped Georgia State women's golf first day as the Panthers sit 13th in the 15-team Jacksonville Collegiate at Amelia Island. The final holes holes on Tuesday were rained out.
Georgia State carded rounds of 315 and 313 in the 36-hole Monday on the Amelia Island National Course. Sari, a freshman from Germany, posted rounds of 77 and 73 for a 150 (+6) to sit in a tie for 18th place in the 81-golfer event. This is just Sari's second collegiate event as she started with 89, improved to 83, then dropped to 76 in her opening tournament last weekend. Her 73 represents her new low at GSU.
“I can say I am really proud of Yasemin Sari because she is finding a way even though she isn't really playing her best golf,” coach Cathy Mant said. “She is really a fighter and I'm thrilled to see her potential.”
Coach Mant, however, was disappointed in the team's standing. “I know we can do better and we are underachieving,” she noted. “We've had some illnesses and there are some reasons we aren't doing as well as we're capable, so we know there is still some good times ahead. It is obvious we need to get outdoors and practice more, so as the weather breaks that will help us, too.”
Senior Lauren Court added round of 79 and 79 for a 158 (+14) to place 53rd heading into the final round. Freshman Paula Zabarte started with a 77, but dipped to 85 in the second round for 162 (+18) for 65th. Solene Le Coz added a pair of 82s and Emily Royer finished with 86-79 for 69th.
Florida International carded a 580 (+4) took a three-stroke lead over North Florida at 583 (+7). Sun Belt member Arkansas State sits five strokes ahead of Georgia State in ninth place, giving the Panthers a target for Tuesday.
