Julie Lied fired a 1-under 71 as Georgia State carded a final-day 307 score to finish in 14th place in the 18-team field of the 43rd annual Furman Lady Paladin Invitational.
Lied carded four birdies and 11 pars in shooting a personal-best 1-under for the third time in her career.
Georgia State had a strong final day going and had the second-lowest score of the day beyond the half-way point, but was unable to complete that solid round. The Panthers had 14 bogeys and one double bogey over the past five holes to slide back down from 10th to their final 14th place.
“We were making birdies and got off to a really good start, but our lack of mental strength with the young players hurt us over the final holes,” head coach Cathy Mant said. “This shows me that we have the potential to play good golf when we stop compounding our own mistakes. We can hold our heads high and think of the positives we had and know we will be better tomorrow than we were today.”
Host Furman dominated this event that included a field of 12 teams ranked in the top 100 and six in the top 50. The Paladins won by 22 strokes over Wake Forest, Texas Tech, Florida State, Yale and Kansas in the top six of the tournament. Furman's Taylor Tolland was medalist at 7-under par.
“That was an awesome round by Julie and I am happy for her success,” Mant noted. “She is improving each round now and I expect she can do this more often this year. She knows she can play college golf now and should start feeling more comfortable with her game.”
Georgia State will have a couple weeks to practice now in preparation for the next tournament on Oct. 13 at East Carolina.
