DAVIDSON, N.C. – Behind a great performance by sophomore goalkeeper Brie Haynes, the Georgia State women's soccer team battled Davidson to a 0-0 double-overtime draw in Davidson, N.C. on Sunday afternoon.
“I am happy after a solid weekend,” head coach Derek Leader said. “I thought our legs were heavy in the first half and we started slow as a result. We improved in the second half and were very good in overtime. This weekend was important for us to keep building as we only have two more matches before Sun Belt play begins. We look forward to being at home next weekend to wrap up our non-conference schedule.”
The Wildcats threatened first in the 6th minute but Vicky Bruce's shot hit the post. Five minutes later, Haynes was called on to make a trio of saves to keep the match scoreless.
- First Jenni Isaac was denied by Haynes in the 11th minute.
- Then on the resulting rebound, Haynes saved Stephanie Piperno's effort.
- Just over 10 second later Becca Fisher fired a shot on goal but Haynes again was there to make the save.
Davidson hit the post for a second time in the first half in the 28th minute.Then in the 38th minute, Haynes recorded her fourth save of the first half on a shot by Piperno.
Georgia State's first chance came in the 45th minute when Callie O'Connor fired a shot on goal, however, Wildcat keeper Rachel Locke made the save to keep the score 0-0 after 45 minutes of play.
- At the break, Davidson held an 8-2 shot advantage over the Panthers and both teams took one corner kick.
GSU went on the attack first in the second half when Locke was forced to save Ashley Nagy's shot in the 47th minute. Davidson attempted a pair of shots over the next 10 minutes but both were off target. The Panthers had another scoring chance in the 63rd minute, but Locke saved Kylie Ruffule's effort.
Both teams attempted two shots over the final 27 minutes of the second half but none were on target and regulation ended with the score still tied 0-0.
- After 90 minutes, the Wildcats had attempted 13 shots to GSU's six.
Less than 20 seconds into the first overtime Haynes was called on to make a save on Isaac's shot. Davidson attempted one more shot in the first period of extra time but it was not on target.
Georgia State threatened first in the second period of extra time. Whitney Ravan and Margaret Bruemmer each fired a shot on goal in the 102nd minute but both were wide of the target. The Wildcats best chance came in the 109th minute but Haynes saved Bruce's effort.
Nagy had the last chance of the match in the final minute for the Panthers but her shot was too high and the matched ended in a goalless draw.
- Overall, Davidson outshot Georgia State 17-9 and the Panthers took one more corner kick (4-3).
- Haynes finished the match with six saves and is now 1-3-2 with three shutouts this season.
- The GSU defense and Haynes have now recorded three straight shutouts and have not allowed a goal in more than 348 minutes.
- The Panthers return to the field on Friday, Sept. 19 to host Mercer. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the GSU Soccer Complex.
