ATLANTA – On a sweltering Sunday night, the Georgia State women's soccer team was defeated by Samford 2-1 at the GSU Soccer Complex. Whitney Ravan scored the lone goal for the Panthers as GSU falls to 0-3-1 overall.
Although GSU came up short on the scoreboard, head coach Derek Leader was pleased with the team's hard work and effort tonight. “The team battled and we played a lot better tonight then we did on Friday,” Leader said. “We have to look at the positives because we played a good team and our girls showed a lot of character.”
After an uneventful first five minutes, Samford went on the attack, attempting four shots over the next five minutes.
- First Malcanisha Kelley had her shot blocked by a GSU defender in the 6th minute.
- In the 8th minute, Heather Lacy tried to score with a header but her attempt drifted wide.
- Anna Allen then fired a shot on goal in the 9th minute but Panther goalkeeper Brie Haynes was there to make the save.
- One minute later, Haynes recorded her second save on an effort by Jermaine Seoposenwe.
The Bulldogs finally found the back of the net in the 14th minute when Lacy scored to give Samford a 1-0 lead. Taylor Borman sent a dangerous cross to the far post that Lacy was able to head over Haynes who was off her line.
Callie O'Connor attempted a shot for GSU in the 17th minute but she could not curve her shot on target and it went wide of the right post. One minute later, Allen again tested Haynes but she was able to save the Bulldog's effort.
In the 24th minute, Georgia State tied the match 1-1 when Ravan scored her first goal of the season. Samford goalkeeper Anna Maddox attempted to clear the ball while under pressure from Ravan, but Maddox misplayed the ball. Ravan was able to steal the ball and slot it into the empty net to tie the score.
The Bulldogs retook the lead 10 minutes later when Lacy scored her second goal of the match. Following a Panther foul, Samford sent a dangerous free kick into the box. After a deflection, Borman laid the ball off to Lacy who scored into the bottom left corner past a diving Haynes.
- At the break Samford led 2-1 and held a 13-2 shot advantage.
- The Bulldogs took all six corner kicks of the first 45 minutes.
- GSU's Haynes had three saves at intermission.
Haynes was forced to make her fourth and fifth saves early in the second half. First, Kelley fired a shot in the 48th minute but Haynes was there for the stop. One minute later Seoposenwe fired a shot on goal but Haynes smothered it with a diving save.
The Panthers continued to push for an equalizer in the second half. Ashley Nagy fired a shot over Maddox but it deflected off the crossbar in the 63rd minute. Seven minutes later, Nagy had another chance but her attempt was too high.
Kelley had another chance in the 88th minute when she got behind the GSU defense. She did not have a good angle and Haynes was quick off her line. As a result, the Bulldog forward pushed her shot wide of the right post.
Georgia State had one final chance in the 89th minute but Nagy's shot was right at Maddox who made the easy save to clinch the 2-1 win for Samford.
- The Bulldogs outshot the Panthers 16-5 and took all seven corners of the match.
- GSU's next match is on Friday, Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. on the road against Tennessee Tech.
