OT Penalty Kick Spells 1-0 Defeat in Season Opener

GREENVILLE, S.C. – After 98 scoreless minutes, the Georgia State women's soccer team was defeated by Furman 1-0 on a penalty kick in the ninth minute of overtime at Stone Stadium in Greenville, S.C. on Friday afternoon.

In the 99th minute of the season opener, the Paladins were awarded a penalty kick after a Panther defender was called for an apparent handball inside the 18-yard box. Furman's DeVita stepped to the spot and scored past Haynes to clinch the 1-0 win.

“Losing on a penalty kick in overtime is very tough, especially on an infraction that I do not believe occurred,” head coach Derek Leader occurred. “Even the opposing coach was saddened by the way such an evenly fought match ended.”

“I don't want to take anything away from Furman,” Leader said. “They are a fantastic team and both teams had many chances to win. Furman is very dangerous and explosive and will have a great year. However, I am very impressed by the resilience of our team and look forward to our next game against Kennesaw State on Monday.”

  • Georgia State went on the attack first by winning a pair of corner kicks in the fifth minute.
  • Furman responded by forcing GSU goalkeeper Brie Haynes to make a pair of saves on attempts by Stephanie DeVita.
  • GSU's best scoring chance came in the 25th minute when Lauren Harriman got behind the Paladin defense. To find herself one-on-one with Furman keeper Ross Hull. Harriman fired a low shot but Hull was quick off her line to make the save.

The Panthers attempted three more shots in the first half but none were on target. In the first 45 minutes, both teams had attempted four shots and Georgia State took the only three corner kicks.

Early in the second half, Devita forced Haynes to make another save with a header in the 53rd minute. 15 minutes later Furman's Kristin Fennegan fired a shot on target but Haynes was there for the save. Haynes recorded another save in the 77th minute on another shot by DeVita.

DeVita attempted one more shot in the 86th minute but it was not on target and regulation ended with the score tied 0-0.

In the first overtime, GSU went on the offensive early but could not create a scoring chance off Margaret Bruemmer's corner kick in the 94th minute.

NOTEBOOK:

  • Furman outshot the Panthers 14-7 and GSU held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
  • 2014 marked the sixth straight season that Georgia State opened the regular season on the road.
  • Sophomore Brie Haynes continued her impressive 2013 form, recording six saves in her first action of the season.
  • Georgia State's next match is Monday, Aug. 25 against in-state rival Kennesaw State. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Ga.
