ATLANTA – The Georgia State women's tennis team picked up its second win of the season Monday, defeating Mercer 7-0 at the Atlanta Athletic Club. The Panthers collectively only lost one set in the rout of the Bears.
The Panthers (2-1) won all three of their doubles matches 6-1, cruising past the Bears for the first point of the match. No. 23 Abigail Tere-Apisah and Masa Grgan defeated Danielle Jones and Lucie Payrat at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Marcia Tere-Apisah and Tarani Kamoe defeated Roxy Bartz and Haley Powell. At No. 3 doubles, Chaimaa Roudami and Linn Timmermann won over Natalie Franklin and Liza Klyachkin.
At No. 1 singles, No. 8 nationally-ranked Abigail Tere-Apisah rolled past Jones 6-0, 6-1. Grgan picked up her first singles win of the spring season, defeating Payrat 6-3, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, Marcia Tere-Apisah came back from losing the first set 6-4, to take the next two sets, 6-2 and 10-5 in the final set tiebreaker. It was also her first singles win of the spring. Timmermann, at No. 4 singles, moved to 2-1 on the season in singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Franklin.
Rounding out the singles wins for the Panthers were Maryna Kozachenko at No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 rout of Powell and Chaimaa Roudami with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Klyachkin.
"We did a great job bouncing back after our loss on Saturday," interim head coach Robin Stephenson said. "We were focused and executed our game plan on every court. We were able to work through some things and gain confidence for our upcoming matches."
Up next for the Panthers is a weekend trip to West Lafayette, Ind., to face Purdue and Tulsa. The Panthers will first face Purdue at 3 p.m. on Friday in the Schwartz Tennis Center.
