MOBILE, Ala. – In the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Championship, the Georgia State women's soccer team suffered a tough 1-0 loss to Texas State on Wednesday, Nov. 5 in Mobile, Ala. A goal in the 28th minute was the difference in a very tight match.
Texas State had the first chance in the fourth minute but Tori Hale's effort was wide right. Georgia State's first opportunity was in the 11th minute off a corner kick by Margaret Bruemmer. Lindsay Leonardo sent a header on target but it was saved by Bobcat keeper Caitlynn Rinehart.
In the 12th minute, Hale responded with another chance for Texas State but her shot was saved by GSU goalkeeper Brie Haynes. The Panthers then had a pair of opportunities to take the lead over the next three minutes.
- First Whitney Ravan's low shot from a tight angle was saved by Rinehart in the 14th minute.
- Then one minute later, Margaret Bruemmer fired a shot from distance but it was too high.
After another off-target effort by Hale, the Bobcats grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute on Lynsey Curry's seventh goal of the season.
- Taylor Allen found Hale down the left flank and Hale crossed the ball into the 18-yard box.
- Curry was then able to head the ball past Haynes and into the back of the net.
Brie Haynes made another save for GSU in the 31st minute to keep it a one-goal game. The Bobcats had two more chances over the next three minutes but both were off target.
Texas State nearly doubled its lead in the 40th minute but Landry Lowe's shot hit the bottom of the left post. Georgia State had a corner kick in the 44th minute but were unable to create a scoring chance.
- At the half the Bobcats led 1-0 and held an 8-3 shot advantage.
- The Panthers took the only two corner kicks of the first 45 minutes.
GSU started the second half on the front foot in search of an equalizer.
- The Panthers first chance was in the 51st but Leonardo's effort was wide.
- Moore then had a chance off a corner kick in the 53rd minute but her header was just high of the crossbar.
Texas State had two opportunities over the next 10 minutes but both were off target. The Bobcats had another chance in the 71st minute but Lauren Prater's shot was blocked by a Georgia State defender.
GSU best scoring chance came in the 82nd minute of good team play.
- Margaret Bruemmer found Kylie Ruffule down the right flank with a first-time pass.
- Ruffule then found Moore with a low cross into the 18-yard box.
- Moore was able to get a shot off but it was wide of the right post.
Georgia State could not create another opportunity over the final eight minutes and the match ended 1-0 to Texas State.
- Over 90 minutes the Bobcats outshot the Panthers 15-6, including 5-2 in shots on target.
- Both teams attempted three corner kicks and both goalkeepers finished with two saves.
- GSU finished the season with a 6-10-4 record and were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament for the second-straight season.
